What Is Included In A National Background Check?

Answer:   There is no such thing as a national background check available to the public.

The closest thing to a national background check is the FBI’s NCIC database which is only available to law enforcement personnel. This database is comprised of criminal records that have been submitted by various law enforcement agencies around the country. That said, even this source of information has been shown in the past to be only as much as 60% accurate at times. The reason for this is that not all law-enforcement agencies submit their records for inclusion in the FBI’s database.

When someone is offering to provide you a “national background check” what they are in fact going to provide you is information that has been gathered and compiled in a single database from numerous sources, many of which are usually databases themselves. This very process of locating and compiling records ensures that the information that you are receiving may be, in almost all cases, outdated or incorrect information and therefore must verified before using.
