It's Time to Check Your House / Apartment Lighting

With the daylight savings time change each winter comes a perfect opportunity to take a moment to assess the exterior security of your residence.  For most of us, the new change in time means that when we return home after work each evening it's likely now dark outside. The darkness of night time provides great cover and concealment for criminals to commit crimes such as burglary, home invasion, robbery, assaults, theft and many more. As you approach your residence or normal parking space, are you looking for anything that's out of place in the area or around the residence? Are you noticing if your exterior lights are on or not or whether they're all working properly? Do they provide enough light for you to be able to easily identify any activity near the entry points of the home, windows and doors? Are bushes, plants or trees blocking your view of these access points? Does it look like someone is home or not?

These are all very important questions to ask yourself because if you can't detect any abnormal or unauthorized activity then neither will any passersby such as your neighbors or roving police patrols.

As technology has continually improved, so have our options for illuminating our properties. Motion sensing lighting, timers and LED lighting technology have made increasing your security and the highlighting of your property very affordable.

If you've not already done so, take the next opportunity as you drive by your residence, be it a house or apartment property, that you not just look but scrutinize it through the eyes of a criminal.  Start thinking about ways you may be making it easier to become a victim of a property crime.

There is a wealth of information available online through videos and written material which can help you make your home safer for you and your family.  Of course, Paul McCaghren and Associates is available to assist you as well.
